Cancer
patients often hear that “they are in remission” or that “there is no evidence of disease.” This
basically means that no cancer is currently detectable in the body (through
scans, blood work, bone marrow biopsy, and/or other tests).
Being declared “cancer-free”
is essentially the same thing, but it comes with the conviction of the
oncologist that the cancer is gone.
The
term “remission” means that cancer treatment
reduced or eliminated the symptoms and signs of cancer. Remission may last
for months, years or the rest of your life. Remission may not mean you're free
of cancer (cured), but it's an important turning point for you and your cancer
care team.
We define smoking cessation as the absence of cigarette use during the past year.
To put it clearly, remission with regards to addiction
means the patient or the person has abstained from that drug for some time. He
is gradually trying to cut down on the number of cigarettes per day or number
of drinks per day. It can also mean the patient has suddenly stopped using the
drugs/tobacco – “cold turkey”
Cold Turkey - abrupt and complete withdrawal from
the use of an addictive substance, as a narcotic drug, alcohol, or tobacco.
This may cause withdrawal symptoms in patients.
